HCM City rolls out mass health screening drive

VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City on April 17 launched a large-scale health screening campaign at Binh Phu Park, with 168 local health stations across wards and communes simultaneously offering free check-ups and disease screening for residents.

The initiative marks a major step toward shifting the healthcare approach from treatment to prevention to ensure that 100% of residents receive at least one health check-up per year by 2026.

Through the programme, the local health sector seeks to strengthen early detection and timely intervention, while gradually building a comprehensive health data system to support continuous care and the development of a smart urban healthcare model.

Dr. Ngo Tran Liem Phuoc, head of a community-based healthcare team in Binh Phu ward, said local units have been equipped with additional medical devices to improve service delivery. The programme is expected to provide initial health screenings for around 500 residents, prioritising the elderly, low-income groups and those with limited access to healthcare services.

The ward-level health station is working in coordination with Nhan Dan 115 Hospital to receive technical support and equipment for measuring blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol, alongside the use of digital tools to manage residents’ health data. Screening results will be continuously updated for monitoring, consultation or referral when necessary.

Common conditions detected among residents include hypertension, diabetes, lipid disorders, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Early screening enables timely diagnosis, consultation and, where possible, treatment provision.

Meanwhile, the health station in Binh Thanh ward has partnered with Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital to conduct screenings for 200 residents.

According to Dr. Quach Kim Ung, acting director of the ward health station, all results will be uploaded to the city’s community health management system within 24 hours and integrated into each resident’s electronic health record for long-term monitoring.

Residents will be categorised into different health groups after screening. Those in stable condition will continue to be monitored locally, while individuals with risk factors or suspected conditions, including potential cancer cases, will be advised for follow-up or referred to specialised hospitals for timely diagnosis and treatment.

“This approach helps reduce travel, cut costs and waiting times. Continuous monitoring at the grassroots level, combined with early cancer screening, allows for early detection, minimising complications and enabling timely intervention,” Dr. Ung noted.

Health officials emphasised that the programme stands out not only for its scale, with the participation of 101 hospitals, but also for its approach of bringing high-quality medical services directly to communities.
