HCM City plans VND8.4 trillion monorail line

Ho Chi Minh City wants to build a monorail line running from the Phan Van Tri -Nguyen Oanh crossroad (Go Vap district) through Quang Trung Software Park to Tan Chanh Hiep station (District 12) which will cost an estimated VND8.4 trillion (US$376.6 million).

The municipal People’s Committee has asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to include the project, named the monorail No.3, in the list of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects in need of Project Development Facility capital (PDF).

A detailed proposal on the project will be made within 2017 and a feasibility study, ground clearance and invitation of investor will be conducted in the next two years, so that construction work can start in 2019 and be completed in five years. The selection of investors will be made through international bidding.

According to municipal People’s Committee, the 16.5-kilometre monorail line will ensure connection between the urban railway system and other public transport networks like bus, taxi and waterway vehicles, thus easing traffic congestion and reducing accidents as well as environmental pollution.

Under the city’s adjusted master plan for transportation to 2020 approved by the Government, the southern hub will have eight metro lines, six bus rapid transit routes and three tramway or monorail lines.

The tramway No.1 line, which is 13 kilometre long, will run from Ba Son Shipyard through Ton Duc Thang Street, Me Linh Square, Vo Van Kiet Street and Ly Chieu Hoang Street to the Western Bus Station in Binh Tan district and Thanh Da Urban Area in Binh Thanh district.

Meanwhile, the monorail No.2, with 27.2 kilometres in length, will start at the Nguyen Van Linh Avenue-National Highway No.1A-National Highway No.50 intersection in District 8 and run through densely populated residential areas in Binh Chanh and Binh Thanh districts and Districts 2 and 7.
