HCM City plans nearly US$112 million upgrade of major southern gateway road
VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City is planning to widen Nguyen Tat Thanh Street to 30-40 metres, build a new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge and construct the Hoang Dieu underpass at a total estimated cost of VND2.95 trillion (about US$112 million) to ease chronic congestion on the southern gateway connecting downtown with the city’s southern areas.
The municipal People’s Committee has approved in principle a proposal to study investment in the project to upgrade and expand Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and replace the existing Tan Thuan 1 Bridge, as submitted by the municipal Department of Construction.
According to the department, Nguyen Tat Thanh Street is among the city’s most congested routes, with traffic volumes exceeding 140% of its designed capacity.
Under the proposed plan, the section from Khanh Hoi Bridge to Tan Thuan Bridge will be widened to 30-40 metres, expanding to six to eight lanes. The new Tan Thuan 1 Bridge will be built to modern standards to ensure load capacity, clearance and compatibility with the riverside urban landscape.
The department also proposed the construction of the Hoang Dieu underpass, with at least four lanes, to separate traffic flows, reduce conflict points and increase throughput on this gateway corridor.
The city aims to complete project preparation and site clearance in 2026, with construction planned for 2027-2029.
The project is expected to resolve long-standing congestion on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street while improving connectivity for port operations, logistics activities and links to the city centre.
To speed up the project, the city has tasked the Department of Planning and Architecture with organising an architectural design competition for the west bank of the Saigon River, from Ba Son Bridge to the Vietnam International Container Terminal. Relevant agencies have been instructed to update and propose targeted adjustments to existing planning documents to ensure consistency.
The Department of Construction will lead the overall project study in coordination with other departments to ensure regulatory compliance and implementation efficiency.
Separately, Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to expand the Ho Chi Minh Museum-Ho Chi Minh City Branch on the Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi site, covering more than 329,000 square metres.
The area will be developed as the centre of the city’s Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space, integrating parkland, the expanded Nguyen Tat Thanh corridor and public-service facilities. The city confirmed that no commercial housing projects will be permitted in this area.
