HCM City deals with unemployment

The number of unemployed people in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to reach 312,000 in 2013, said Le Trong Sang, Deputy Director of the HCM City Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

The city will strive to find jobs for 265,000 people to reduce the rate of unemployment to 4.8 percent from 4.9 percent at present.

In 2012, 289,000 jobs were created in the city, a year on year drop of 1.03 percent. However, the number of Vietnamese workers sent abroad fell by 1,000 to 5,900.

The number of those living on unemployment benefits was 113,000, up 29 percent with total benefits worth over VND857 billion.

The economic situation is the primary cause for increasing unemployment. Many companies have closed and workers have lost their jobs due to the closure of their companies.

Nguyen Tan Dinh, Deputy Director of HCM City’s Management Board of Industrial Parks and Export Processing, said 1,000 employees lost their jobs because most companies had received less orders than before and were just in need of young employees with special skills.
