According to the Hanoi Traffic Police Office, the network of 1,837 AI-powered cameras and smart traffic lights is scheduled to come into operation citywide this month; since the morning of December 10, traffic discipline has improved, with vehicles stopping more neatly within marked lines.

During the morning rush hour on December 10, traffic congestion persists on several major arteries, including Tran Duy Hung, Le Van Luong and Nguyen Chanh.

At Nga Tu So intersection during the morning rush hour, heavy traffic persists but road users show markedly improved compliance, with both motorcycles and cars stopping in the correct lanes and behind stop lines, creating a more orderly flow than before.

The AI system, from cameras to smart traffic signals, is designed not only for automated enforcement but also to ease congestion, modernize traffic infrastructure, strengthen traffic management capacity and promote a more orderly urban culture. The Hanoi Traffic Police Office says the deployment significantly reduces the need for officers to be stationed on the streets to direct traffic while improving transparency in enforcement and supervision.

In addition to the camera network, artificial intelligence is used to control traffic signals, automatically adjusting signal timing in line with real-time traffic volumes.

However, observations show that violations including running red lights, improper lane changes, riding without helmets, driving on sidewalks and illegal stopping or parking still occur, despite the dense deployment of AI camera systems on many city streets.

Despite clearly marked road lines, many vehicles still stop improperly, even directly under the “watchful eyes” of the camera surveillance system.

Many riders continue to flout helmet rules and ride onto sidewalks as a shortcut.

Under the centralized surveillance camera management plan approved by the Hanoi People’s Committee, 1,873 AI-powered cameras have already been installed. The city aims to deploy more than 40,000 cameras by 2030, including over 16,000 dedicated to traffic safety management, environmental monitoring and urban order. The AI camera system is able to identify 20 common traffic violations, features 360-degree scanning capability, facial and license-plate recognition, and can detect violations from distances of around 500 to 700 meters.
