Hanoi student wins 4-year leadership scholarship

VOV.VN - Hanoi native Jonathan Nguyen is the recipient of a full-ride scholarship that allows him to study at two of the best schools in the U.S: the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and Duke University.

The St. Michaels University School (SMUS) student is one of just 36 students from around the world named a Robertson Scholar, a scholarship and leadership development program.

“Jonathan truly deserves this. The Robertson Scholars Leadership Program looks for individuals who will bring the qualities of leadership, curiosity, collaboration and strength of character to these school campuses – and he has them all," says Jenn Bateman, Jonathan's University Counsellor at SMUS. "He is so humble about his strengths and he shows his character in everything he does and in every interaction he has with the people in our community."

The Robertson Scholars Program provides students with full tuition, room, and board while earning their undergraduate degree and allows them to take courses at both universities. The program is further augmented with intentional leadership training experiences and funded summer learning opportunities.

Jonathan will study primarily out of the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and plans to pursue business and commerce.

“From the outset of teaching Jonathan, his positive energy radiated through the classroom and helped to make the year wonderful,” says Graham Lilly, who taught Advanced Placement Macroeconomics. “He took to the ideas very quickly, he prepared himself extremely well for each class, and in class he asked the sort of questions that unlocked conceptual secrets for the others. His enthusiasm is contagious.”

At SMUS, Jonathan was selected by his peers and teachers to take on the leadership role of Head Prefect during his Grade 12 year. In this position, he has worked with fellow students on the Prefect Council and with the school’s administration to be a voice for the students.

“We are so proud of him and his accomplishment, and we look forward to watching as he leaps into his exciting future,” adds Jenn Bateman.
