Hailstorms return to northern mountainous areas

VOV.VN - Northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam were once again hit by hailstorms on the evening of February 26, with hail falling in Phieng Lan village, Nam Cha commune, Nam Nhun district in Lai Chau province, and parts of Phu Yen district in Son La province.

The hailstorm, lasting over 10 minutes with moderate intensity, marked the region’s first hailstorm of the year.

Meteorologists warn that, according to weather radar observations, Muong Lay (Lai Chau) and Quynh Nhai (Son La) face a high risk of further hailstorms overnight on February 26. The storm is expected to move southeast, potentially affecting areas such as Mu Cang Chai in Yen Bai province.

Earlier, on the afternoon of February 21, a hailstorm struck Dien Bien district and Dien Bien Phu city following three months of dry weather. At Tay Trang border gate in Na U commune, Dien Bien district, thick hail blanketed roads and hillsides, damaging large areas of crops.

Weather forecasts indicate that over the next one to two days, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Son La, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, and Ha Giang may continue to see showers and thunderstorms due to the influence of upper-level westerly winds and an intensifying cold front. Some areas may experience hail, whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusty winds during thunderstorms.
