Hailstones, whirlwinds wreak havoc across northern localities

VOV.VN - Yen Bai, Ha Giang and Phu Tho are among northern localities of Vietnam that have suffered serious property damage due to hailstones and whirlwinds caused by the current weak cold spell.

Hailstones and strong winds damaged dozens of local houses and some farming land in Yen Bai province when the cold spell hit on March 28.

A resident in Van Chan district of Yen Bai province was injured during the height of the storm, according to local authorities.

Elsewhere, widespread thunderstorms caused soil and rocks to collapse in nearby Ha Giang province. Strong winds accompanied by hailstones either blew off or damaged nearly 200 house roofs, and damaged some subsidiary crop areas.

Total damage caused by natural disasters in Ha Giang was estimated at more than VND3.7 billion.

In Phu Tho province, heavy rain lasting for more than 1 hour accompanied by thunderstorms in Ha Hoa district damaged many crop areas and people’s property.

Initial reports show about 286 houses had their roofs blown off, two schools and two cultural houses were damaged, and more than 180 hectares of subsidiary crops were destroyed.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the cold spell will continue to bring heavy rain to the region. Weather experts warned about severe flooding in in low-lying areas and flash floods and landslides in mountainous localities on March 29.
