Frost surprisingly sets in up north in mid-March
VOV.VN - Outside temperatures dropped to 0°C overnight on March 18, causing frost to form on the peak of Ta Xua Mountain in Yen Bai province that stands at 2,865 meters above sea level.

A representative of the administration of Ban Cong commune, Yen Bai province, confirmed on March 19 morning that the frost began forming overnight and gradually melted around 7 AM.
“The temperature dropped significantly last night. According to tour guides in the area, even with four layers of warm clothing, they still felt the cold,” the official told VTC News.
According to the Northwest Regional Hydro-meteorological Station, each year, Ta Xua experiences frost, mainly during the peak winter months of December and January, or at most, in February. However, this is the first time locals have witnessed frost forming in March.
“While frost is common on Ta Xua during winter, its appearance in March is a rare phenomenon, happening for the first time in the past decade," said the official.
This is the second time in 2025 that frost has been recorded on Ta Xua’s peak, following the first occurrence on January 11.
Ta Xua, standing at 2,865 meters, serves as a natural boundary between Yen Bai and Son La provinces in northern Vietnam.
An intensifying cold air mass has been gripping across the northern region of Vietnam, with temperatures hovering around 5 - 6°C in the highlands and 16°C in the lowland.
Weather forecasts indicate that although northern Vietnam remains cold on March 19, temperatures are gradually rising with increasing sunshine. From March 20 onward, the region will still experience chilly nights and early mornings as the cold air mass weakens.
By the end of March, temperatures are expected to reach around 30°C in some areas, with the possibility of hot weather in certain locations.
