Fresh outbreak of African swine fever detected in Hau Giang

VOV.VN - A new outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) has been recently discovered in a pig-farming household located in Thanh Thoi hamlet, Dong Thanh commune, Chau Thanh district in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang.

The outbreak marks the third report of the disease in the locality so far.

According to a local resident residing in Thanh Thoi hamlet, 40 pigs from his farm started showing  the symptoms of the ASF virus from May 8-13. After notifying authorities regarding the incident, the results of samples taken from the infected pig farm were tested positive for the ASF virus.

Chau Thanh district’s animal health station has been co-ordinating with local authorities and other relevant units to spray disinfectants and cull the 83 pig-strong flock in the contaminated pig farm.

Previously, two outbreaks of ASF were also reported among two households in the districts of Chau Thanh and Vi Thuy with a total of 68 infected pigs forced to be culled.

In order to cope with the ever-changing nature of the ASF epidemic, the Steering Committee for the prevention and control of ASF in Hau Giang province has requested that localities in the region take drastic measures to prevent the further spreading of ASF.

Inspection teams in localities have been asked to tighten the control over the transportation of pigs and pork products throughout the region.

In addition, quarantine checkpoints have been set up in localities that have suffered from outbreaks of ASF in order to strictly and effectively control the epidemic.
