Free train tickets for workers to return home for Tet 2026
VOV.VN - Many disadvantaged workers and families in Ho Chi Minh City who haven't returned to their hometowns for years are being offered free train rides home for family reunions this Lunar New Year (Tet) during Vietnam’s most important traditional festival.
The train, part of the “Trade Union Train – Spring 2026” programme jointly organised by the Ho Chi Minh City Federation of Labour and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, departed from Ho Chi Minh City on February 10, carrying 124 families of workers, along with their spouses and children, to provinces in the central and northern regions of the country.
The programme brought joy and emotional relief to many migrant workers who have been unable to return home for Tet for years due to financial difficulties. Ngo Thi Loan, a worker from Nghe An province, shared her deep appreciation, saying that her four-member family had not been able to reunite with their relatives during Tet for the past four years because of high travel costs. She expressed hope that the programme would continue and reach even more workers living far from their hometowns.
According to Bui Thanh Nhan, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of HCM City and Chairman of the HCM City Federation of Labour, this year the city provided more than 2,993 free train tickets, 820 free air tickets and nearly 5,000 free bus tickets to help workers and their families return home for the Tet holiday.
In addition, local authorities and mass organisations have organised visits and presented Tet gifts to workers who are unable to travel home, particularly those living in rented accommodation, with the aim of creating a warm and inclusive Tet atmosphere for migrant workers.
The Ho Chi Minh City Federation of Labour reported that the city plans to support approximately 350,000 workers during Tet 2026, while promoting digital transformation in organisational work to reduce costs and focus resources on providing direct assistance to workers.
