Former Chilean President highlights role of women and gender equality during VN visit

VOV.VN - Michelle Bachelet Jeria, former President of Chile, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and former Executive Director of UN Women led a delegation from Chile on April 3 to talk with female foreign officials and Vietnamese students about the role of female leaders in multilateral organisations, as well as to discuss foreign, political, and social activities.

The meeting took place within the framework of her working visit to the nation as part of the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of Vietnam-Chile diplomacy which initially began back in 1971.

Those in attendance in the event included Nguyen Phuong Nga, president of the Union of Friendship Organizations, Pham Lan Dung, acting director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Elisa Fernandez Saenz, UN Women Representative in Vietnam, and representatives of UN agencies in Vietnam. They were joined by Ambassadors of several countries and female diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and students of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV).

Whilst at the function, Bachelet emphasised the importance of gender equality in all political and social activities and outlined the belief that there needs to be a change in the concept of the roles of men and women, viewing this as one of the key factors to enhance the role of women in a national society and in the international arena.

She also underscored the need to build a network of female leaders and cadres of organisations, agencies, and countries to promote mutual support and assistance.

At the Q&A session, Michelle Bachelet and the guests of the programme sincerely and openly shared real stories, as well as experiences in her life of socio-political activities, thereby inspiring foreign affairs officials, especially young officials, along generations of young students

Women of any age and position should try to study and work in order to pursue their dreams and help other women develop together, she emphasized.

On behalf of the programme organisers, Dung and Saenz expressed their sincere thanks and admiration for Bachelet's tireless contributions and dedication to the rights and advancement of women around the world.

They stated their hope that she will continue to be an example and inspiration for generations of women in countries around the world moving forward.

Through activities similar to women's roles and positions, women's work and gender equality will be increasingly recognised in a proper manner, thereby realizing the gender equality goals and for the advancement of women, they said.
