Foreign national caught smuggling gold through Mong Cai border gate
VOV.VN - Authorities at Mong Cai International Border Gate, Quang Ninh province, have detained a foreign national for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 750 grams of gold into Vietnam while completing immigration procedures.
According to reports, officers from the Mong Cai International Border Gate Border Guard Station in collaboration with customs officers at the border gate and the Quang Ninh Economic Police Division inspected a foreign man showing suspicious behaviour at the immigration checkpoint on March 15.
During a personal inspection, they discovered that the individual was concealing two round yellow metal pieces, each about 55 mm in diameter and weighing 377 grams.
One piece had been worn around the man’s neck, and the other was hidden inside his trouser pocket. The total weight of the seized items was 754 grams.
At the police office, the man admitted that the two metal pieces were gold and that he had not declared them to customs when entering Vietnam.
The man said he had been hired by an unidentified man, believed to be about 40 years old and wearing a face mask, to transport the gold from Dongxing in China to the Mong Cai border gate.
He was promised a payment of 800 Chinese yuan for delivering the gold across the border.
To evade inspection, the suspect concealed the gold on his body while going through immigration procedures. However, the attempt was detected by border authorities.
Authorities took the man and the gold into temporary custody for further investigation and verification in accordance with Vietnamese law.
The case is currently under investigation by authorities in Quang Ninh province.
