Floods leave 102 dead or missing, causing over VND9 trillion in damage

VOV.VN - As of the morning of November 23, prolonged floods and landslides across Central Vietnam have left 102 people dead or missing, according to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MoAE).

The disasters have inundated tens of thousands of homes, and disrupted major transport routes, with initial economic losses estimated at more than VND9.035 trillion.

The MoAE report shows the disasters have damaged 1,154 houses, with a peak of 186,000 homes submerged; over 80,000 hectares of rice and crops destroyed; and more than 3.2 million livestock and poultry killed or washed away.

Floods and landslides have affected 24 locations along national highways, causing severe traffic disruptions, while railway services through Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa have been suspended. Numerous infrastructure facilities, including transport, irrigation, healthcare, and education, have sustained significant damage.

More than 140,000 personnel mobilised for emergency response

To respond promptly, the military, police, and local authorities have been deployed at full capacity.

The Ministry of National Defence has mobilised 44,668 officers and soldiers along with 2,231 vehicles; delivered 86.5 tonnes of relief goods, clothing, and water purification supplies; and deployed three helicopters to air-drop emergency aid to isolated communities.

The police have dispatched 98,509 officers and 13,566 vehicles to ensure public security and assist with rescue and recovery operations.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in partnership with international organisations, has delivered food supplies, including sausages, biscuits, milk, and bottled water, to flooded areas in Gia Lai and Dak Lak, and provided an additional 1,500 boxes of instant noodles to Dak Lak.

The Ministry of Finance has allocated 4,000 tonnes of rice to Gia Lai and Khanh Hoa.

The Ministry of Health has distributed 6 tonnes of disinfectant chemicals, 150,000 water purification tablets, and 3,000 essential household medical kits to flood-affected areas.

The Ministry of Construction continues efforts to clear landslides and restore traffic on National Highway 1, though 13 locations remain blocked.

Electricity services have been restored for over 920,000 customers, while 258,000 households are without power.

Telecom providers have activated network roaming in Dak Lak, Gia Lai, and Khanh Hoa since November 19 to maintain communication.

On November 22, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee allocated VND80 billion to support four severely affected provinces (VND 20 billion each).

Mass evacuations and ongoing relief efforts

Authorities have evacuated 38,381 households (119,938 people) and supplied food and essential goods to isolated communities. Numerous organisations, individuals, and charities have also mobilised to support affected residents.

Government ministries and local administrations continue to follow directives from the Prime Minister and the National Civil Defence Committee, working urgently to mitigate damage and restore normalcy for affected populations.
