Five consecutive earthquakes hit Kon Tum
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center under the Institute of Geophysics said that on the morning of February 7 five consecutive earthquakes measuring 3.3 to four on the Richter scale struck Kon Plong District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum.
The most powerful quake was measured at magnitude four and occurred at 11:50 a.m. with a focal depth of around 8.1 kilometres.
The four latter quakes of magnitude -3.3, 2.8, 2.5, and 3.7 all hit at a depth of about 8.1 to 10.1 kilometres.
Fortunately, these tremors posed no risk of a natural disaster, the Institute of Geophysics said.
Ove the past two years, Kon Plong district has recorded hundreds of tremors, with the biggest measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale with a depth of around 8.2 kilometres.
In June, 2021, the institute sent staff to this area to set up an additional observation station in order to detect dangerous geological phenomena and thereby release corresponding warnings.
Kon Plong and Kon Tum in general belong to a small fault zone, and previous studies have shown that earthquakes there usually have a magnitude of no more than five, said Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the institute.
Anh stated that the institute regularly provides local authorities with reports on any seismic activities occurring in the province.
