Fansipan Mt. peak in Lao Cai covered in ice and snow
VOV.VN - The peak of Fansipan Mount in Sa Pa in the northern province of Lao Cai was left blanketed with ice and snow on January 21, according to Luu Minh Hai, director of Lao Cai Province Hydro-Meteorological Station.
Hai said that widespread rain has cause temperatures in several areas across the region to drop sharply on January 21 morning.
A worker at the Fansipan cable car station revealed that light rain mixed with snow lasted for about 10 minutes, starting at 6:30am on January 21, resulting in a thin layer of ice to emerge on the ground around the peak of the mountain and in neighbouring areas.
This is a rare natural phenomenon which only occurs in very high mountainous areas in some northern mountainous regions during winter.
Tour operators anticipate that the weather phenomenon will contribute to luring more tourists to Sa Pa National Tourism Area during the upcoming Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet.
This is the first time rain mixed with snow has hit Fansipan since the start of the winter in 2021. Earlier, December 2021, saw Sa Pa become hugely popular among tourists, photographers, and snow seekers as snow and ice appeared on top of the area’s highest mountains.
