Explosion rocks thermal power plant in southern Vietnam

VOV.VN - An explosion at the compound of the Vinh Tan 4 Thermal Power Plant this morning (Mar. 7) was a significant technical event but it is not a nuclear accident, officials told VOV reporters.

The explosion hit around 11:00am at the coal-fired power plant located on the southeast coast of Vietnam in the southern province of Binh Thuan.

A fire erupted and thick black smoke could be seen billowing out of the chimney at the plant shortly after the blast, according to witnesses. Multiple fire engine crews and police responded.

Officials of the utility that operate the plant, which is under construction and not yet fully operational, said there were no victims and no consequences for safety and the environment.
