Elephants in Pitsanulok bathe three times a day to keep cool

Mahouts at Sappraiwan Elephant Sanctuary have had to bathe their elephants in a pond regularly, after the temperature in Pitsanulok Province soared above 39 degrees Celsius this week.

Mr. Prasob Thipprasert, one of the mahouts, said elephants are much like humans. Their daily routine pretty much consists of relaxing and keeping cool two to three times in the pond as it is too hot for them to work or exercise.

They can go on a rampage if they are too hot. Elephants don't have sweat glands. In the wild, they would stay in the shade of the trees to keep their body temperature quite low.

The mahouts bathe the animals first thing in the morning before feeding them. The elephants are also able to go into any of the six ponds located in the sanctuary anytime they feel like it.

There is an in-house veterinarian at the sanctuary, who provides care, and constructs diet plans for these majestic animals.
