Earthquake in Myanmar: Vietnam steps up rescue efforts to save victims

VOV.VN - On April 1, the rescue forces of the Vietnam People’s Army successfully retrieved the body of a victim from a collapsed building due to the earthquake in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

The victim, U Maung Tin, 74, lived in building 2386 in the Bala Tidi area, Zabu Thiri District. When the earthquake struck, he was at home with his wife and a young grandchild. The grandchild was later rescued but had lost one leg.

The rescue team used trained dogs, wall-penetrating radar, and image-based search equipment to locate the deceased. The Vietnamese engineers also used drills and hydraulic cutters to clear debris, ensuring the safety of the rescuers. After more than 4 hours, U Maung Tin’s body was recovered.

Major General Pham Van Ty, head of the Vietnamese rescue team, mentioned that the operation faced many challenges due to the risk of further collapse when using concrete drilling and cutting equipment. However, with determination, the body was recovered and handed over to the family.

The victim’s son expressed deep gratitude, emotionally touched by the fact that he was able to recover his father’s body after believing it was impossible. The Vietnamese rescue forces continued to assist in searching for other victims, working through the night despite the risks. Myanmar witnesses praised the team’s urgent and efficient working spirit.

Despite facing numerous difficulties due to a lack of large equipment, the Vietnamese engineers displayed flexibility and creativity, using hand tools to continue their search and rescue efforts.
