Dong Nai fines Malaysian firm for illegal waste disposal

The People’s Committee of southern Dong Nai province has fined the subsidiary of a Malaysian company VND9.7 billion (around US$427,300) for illegally burying waste.

Chin Well Fasteners Vietnam Ltd Co in Nhon Trach district has been reported to have dumped 1,600 tonnes of muddy substances containing chemicals at four separate spots.

An initial examination has found that the earth around the spots has been contaminated. The inspection team has taken samples for further examination.

Local authorities also said that the company was responsible for cleaning up the sites.

However, there was insufficient basis for criminal charges, said Colonel Nguyen Van Tho of the provincial police department.

In July 2016, Chin Well Fasteners Vietnam was also caught dumping untreated sewage.
