Dak Nong set to host 20th international symposium on volcanic caves

VOV.VN - The 20th international symposium on volcanic caves is scheduled to get underway in the Central Highland province of Dak Nong between Nov. 22 - 26.

The gathering will bring together approximately 350 domestic and foreign delegates representing countries who are members of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Participating delegates will discuss the values of the cave system, as well as ways in which to contribute to the conservation and effective exploitation of geological heritage on an international scale.

A wide range of activities will take place during the event, including exhibitions, a tourism programme, and tours to discover volcanic caves in Krong No district.

Through the event UNESCO-recognised Dak Nong Geopark will be given a platform to promote its image worldwide. The geopark covers a total area of 4,760 km2 comprising five districts (Krong No, Cu Jut, Dak Mil, Dak Song, and Dak G’long) and Gia Nghia town.

The site dating back 140 million years is made up of limestone, ammonites, and various fossils serving as the silent witnesses of its marine past.

About 10,000 years ago the local volcano still erupted, creating the biggest volcanic cave system in Southeast Asia, which was then inhabited by prehistoric people.
