Daily COVID-19 numbers reach new peak at nearly 6,000 across 33 localities
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s daily COVID-19 infection tally hit a record high of 5,926 after 2,828 further positive cases, including 21 imported infections were confirmed by the Ministry of Health on July 18 evening.
Of 5,587 fresh active cases recorded domestically, Ho Chi Minh City still accounted for the majority at 4,692, followed by Binh Duong (345), Dong Nai (147), Dong Thap (101), Long An (89), Khanh Hoa (60), Phu Yen (55), Da Nang (46), Tay Ninh (42), Ha Noi (42), Ba Ria - Vung Tau (41), Vinh Long (38), Binh Thuan (37), Tien Giang (31), Can Tho (26), Kien Giang (19), and Ben Tre (17). The remaining localities logged single-digit community infections.
Of the new cases, 4,960 were discovered inside quarantined facilities or zones currently under lockdown.
With the latest additions, a total of 51,771 domestic, and 2,059 imported cases were recorded so far in the country, including 50,201 detected during the ongoing coronavirus wave that started nearly three months ago.
Furthermore the Health Ministry also announced the discharge of a further 355 COVID-19 patients, boosting the total recoveries to 10,667.
In the face of the swift spreading of the disease, the country will make all-out efforts to fast-track COVID-19 testing to promptly detect infection cases.
According to Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long, the health sector has come up with scenarios to carry out the Government’s Directive No.16 in pandemic-hit localities, with a particular focus on adjusting testing strategy and increasing testing capacity to minimise transmission risks.
In addition, more intensive care units are to be set up soon in a bid to treat serious coronavirus cases, the Minister said.
The same day, the Treatment Sub-Committee under the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced an additional 29 fatalities regarding COVID-19, raising the death toll in the country to 254 since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. The deceased patients were reported from July 4-17 in Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Binh Duong, Dong Thap, Bac Giang, and Hanoi.
