Criminal proceedings against Le Thanh Van launched

The Investigation Police Agency of the Department of Public Security of the northern province of Thai Binh has announced decisions to launch criminal proceedings against and arrested Le Thanh Van, a deputy of the 15th National Assembly, for the charge of abusing position and power to influence others for personal gain in line with Article 358 of the Criminal Code.

These decisions were approved by the People's Procuracy of Thai Binh province.

Earlier on the same day, the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee issued a resolution agreeing with a proposal by the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuracy to prosecute, detain and search Van’s residence and workplace. The resolution also temporarily suspends Van’s duty and powers as a NA deputy, effective from the date of issuing the prosecution decision.

Van, 60, born in Hau Loc district in Thanh Hoa province and residing in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem district, holds a doctorate degree in law. He served as a standing member of the NA’s Finance and Budget Committee in the 14th and 15th terms. Van has held a seat in the legislature for three consecutive terms, from the 13th to the 15th tenures.

This move is part of a wider investigation into a case involving Luu Binh Nhuong and his accomplices who are accused of appropriating assets and abusing position and power to influence others for personal gain in Thai Binh province.
