COVID-19: Vietnam reports six fresh cases, 21st fatality

VOV.VN - The country has registered an additional 6 coronavirus cases and one COVID-19 fatality over the past 12 hours, elevating the national infection tally to 911 and the death count to 21, the Ministry of Health reported on August 14 morning.

Of the latest cases, three patients in the northern provinces of Hai Duong and Thai Binh came into close contact with the same positive coronavirus patient (patient 867), and the remaining three in the central province of Quang Nam are relatives of COVID-19 patient numbered 722.

Meanwhile, a 61 year- old female patient of Da Nang city, who had suffered  from type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity died on the evening of August 13, taking the national count of the confirmed deaths to 21.

Diagnosis of her fatality included pneumonia caused by COVID-19 severe respiratory failure complications, septic shock with multi-organ damage, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

The Treatment Sub-Committee of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control said, 4 more patients were declared to be free from COVID-19, including one at Hoa Vang Field Hospital of Da Nang City, and 3 at Hoa Lu District Medical Center.
The four additions have brought the number of recoveries to 425 or 46.7% of the total.

Among the patients under treatment, 31 has tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 once, and 61 others have tested negative for at least twice.

According to Acting Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long, both Hue Central Hospital and Quang Nam Central General Hospital are providing treatment for a number of COVID-19 patients in critical condition.

The Ministry of Health has also dispatched leading experts to support the two hospitals in treatment and donated gifts worth US$86,360 to help them in the fight against COVID-19, Long said.

Meanwhile, amid the increasingly complicated developments of the pandemic, the northern province of Hai Duong has started to enforce social distancing measures as from zero hours of August 14 after the detection of a new locally transmitted case with unclear source of infection. The social distancing order will drag out until further notice.

By August 14 morning, Vietnam has recorded 911 cases of COVID-19 in total, including 327 returning from pandemic-hit countries and territories, 21 fatalities, and 444 linked to Da Nang hotspot, the locality that detected the first case of domestic infection on July 25.
