COVID-19: 220 new cases recorded over six hours, tally surpasses 12,000

VOV.VN - As many as 220 people have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Vietnam during the past six hours, raising the country’s cumulative tally of infections to 12,014, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Of the total, 212 cases were locally transmitted and eight cases were imported, the MoH said in its 12.00am COVID-19 update on June 17.

Bac Giang, the country's largest coronavirus hotspot, took the lead with 178 cases, followed by Ho Chi Minh City (30), Tien Giang (2), Ha Tinh (1) and Nghe An (1).

Most of the locally acquired cases were detected in quarantine and lockdown areas, and relevant agencies were trying to locate the sources of infection of four cases.

Meanwhile, eight people were diagnosed with the virus after returning from Malaysia, Japan and India.

The virus has spread to 40 cities and provinces nationwide since late April 2021, with more than 8,600 cases confirmed.

Overall, Vietnam has logged a total of 12,014 cases, both locally transmitted and imported infections, since the SARS – CoV - 2 virus emerged in January 2020.

Sixty-one COVID-19 deaths have been reported, including 26 cases during the latest outbreak.

More than 4,500 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the disease.
