COVID-19: 1,716 cases recorded in Vietnam over 24 hours

VOV.VN - Vietnam confirmed 1,716 coronavirus infections in 48 localities nationwide on May 19, decreasing by 115 compared to the previous day.

Only one imported case was recorded, and the remainder were locally acquired infections, the Ministry of Health said in its coronavirus update on May 19.

Notably none of the localities reported more than 400 cases each. Hanoi took the lead, registering 381 cases, followed by Nghe An (126), Phu Tho (111) and Vinh Phuc (83).

In the south, Ho Chi Minh City, the busiest locality in Vietnam, reported 46 cases, followed by Binh Duong (20), Binh Phuoc (15), Ba Ria – Vung Tau (12), and Binh Thuan (11).

Localities that saw the number of infections decrease most compared to the previous day were Bac Ninh (-80), Vinh Phuc (-56), and Hai Phong (-39).

Meanwhile, localities that saw the number of infections rise most compared to the previous day were Nghe An (+46), Son La (+18), and Quang Binh (+17).

On average 1,799 cases were recorded in Vietnam daily in the past seven days.

The same day, the Ministry of Health announced an additional 9,587 patients recovering from the disease, and just one more death.

However, Bac Giang province registered to add 1,012 cases to the national COVID-19 database after reviewing counts in districts and towns.

At present, 204 patients are relying on mechanical ventilation and two patients are receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a sophisticated form of therapy that is used to save the lives of patients in critical condition.

As of 6pm on May 19, Vietnam has confirmed 10.7 million infections, ranking 12th out of 227 countries and territories worldwide.

Of the total, nearly 9.4 million patients have recovered, and 43,073 patients have died of the virus and underlying illnesses.

More than 218 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered nationwide.
