COVAX delivers over 1 mln more AstraZeneca vaccine doses to Vietnam
VOV.VN - Vietnam received 1,188,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from the COVAX Facility on August 2, bringing the total number of COVAX-sponsored vaccine doses to the country to nearly 8.7 million.
According to UNICEF Vietnam, the latest shipment of the Vaxzevria vaccine, also known as AstraZeneca vaccine and developed by Oxford/AstraZeneca, was delivered from Laboratorio Univesal Farma manufacturing facility in Spain.
Vaxzevria has been approved by the WHO for emergency use worldwide and has been used in Vietnam since March under its previous name.
Among the 8,681,300 doses supplied to Vietnam through the COVAX Facility, 5,000,000 doses are the Moderna vaccine donated by the US Government, whilst the rest are from AstraZeneca.
The COVAX Facility is co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO), Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations (CEPI), and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, with UNICEF as the key delivery partner.
At present over 6.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered across Vietnam, with 659,064 people receiving the second shot.
UNICEF Vietnam believes that the additional vaccines will help the country expand its vaccination coverage and reach more people from priority groups.
Vietnam aims to vaccinate approximately 70% of its population, or about 75 million people, to achieve herd immunity by the end of the first quarter of 2022.
