Cold air weakens storm but triggers heavy rain across central Vietnam

VOV.VN - Storm Fengshen is forecast to make landfall between central Da Nang and Quang Ngai provinces on October 23 with sustained winds of level 6 (39-49 km/h) and gusts of level 8 (62-74 km/h).

Although typhoon Fengshen is expected to weaken rapidly after moving inland, the typhoon’s circulation, combined with cold air and easterly winds, will bring widespread heavy rain lasting through the end of October.

Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF)., said the storm will weaken into a tropical depression after landfall, but the interaction between the storm’s circulation, the cold front, and easterly winds will cause torrential rain across provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai.

Heavy rains are forecast to persist from the night of October 22 to October 27, with total rainfall estimated at 200-400 mm and up to 700 mm in some areas, particularly from southern Quang Tri to Da Nang.

Localized downpours may exceed 900 mm, posing a high risk of flash floods, landslides, and inundation in low-lying and urban areas.

Lam stressed that while the cold air mass reduces the storm’s wind intensity, it significantly increases the risk of prolonged heavy rain and flooding. The interaction between these systems could trigger large-scale rainfall across central Vietnam, especially from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai.

From October 23 to 30, major rivers in the region are expected to experience substantial rises, with flood peaks reaching or exceeding alarm level 3. Authorities have warned of severe flooding, flash floods, and landslides in mountainous areas, urging residents to take preventive measures to ensure safety for people and property.

Before the storm’s approach, from the night of October 20 to the morning of October 21, scattered showers and thunderstorms already occurred in areas from Thua Thien Hue to Quang Ngai and parts of the southern region, with some locations recording rainfall of over 130 mm. Meteorological agencies continue to monitor the storm and cold-air system closely and have been issuing real-time warnings of flash floods and landslides to support local response efforts.
