Cho Ray Hospital launches VND500 billion interventional cardiology system

VOV.VN - Cho Ray Hospital has put into operation a VND 500 billion interventional cardiology system, marking a major step forward in strengthening its capacity to diagnose and treat complex cardiovascular diseases in southern Vietnam.

The system was inaugurated in Ho Chi Minh City, replacing outdated and fragmented equipment with a modern, fully integrated platform funded through increased revenue sources in line with the Ministry of Health’s policy, including a dedicated VND 500 billion investment package for the hospital.

According to Pham Thanh Viet, Deputy Director in charge of administration, Cho Ray Hospital treats a large number of patients with severe and complicated heart conditions, requiring both highly experienced specialists and advanced medical technology.

The new system significantly expands the hospital’s ability to accurately detect complex cardiovascular lesions that were previously difficult or impossible to diagnose. Earlier detection enables timely intervention, helping reduce complications and mortality.

Notably, the system supports a wide range of minimally invasive techniques, allowing many patients to avoid major surgery. For elderly patients or those with multiple underlying conditions, catheter-based interventions via blood vessels are safer, less traumatic and shorten recovery time compared with open-heart surgery.

Despite higher technical costs, Dr Pham Thanh Viet said the benefits are clear, including improved survival outcomes, lower risks of long-term complications and better post-treatment quality of life, while also easing the burden of prolonged care.

The system also increases operational capacity, shortens waiting times for interventions and creates conditions for medical staff to adopt and perform more advanced cardiology techniques.

Looking ahead, Cho Ray Hospital is set  to transfer techniques to other medical facilities as lower-level hospitals develop specialised capacity, helping reduce pressure on tertiary centres and enabling patients to access high-quality cardiac care closer to home. This approach is expected to support deeper development of cardiology services across southern Vietnam and, potentially, nationwide.

Nguyen Tri Thuc, Deputy Minister of Health, said investment in a modern, integrated interventional cardiology system is essential for a top-tier referral hospital such as Cho Ray.

Alongside  patient care in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern region, the system will also play an important role in training and technology transfer, contributing to improved cardiovascular treatment quality and easing pressure on central  hospitals.
