Police said the suspects rented rooms in Bac Cuong ward and used Chinese SIM cards to sell the chemical methanol online via the local wifi network. They required their buyers to send money into their accounts first, saying they had to pay taxes or storage costs, and then cut off all contact.
They were found to have connections with a ring accused of 200 online methanol swindling cases in 12 provinces and cities of China.
Hekou police worked with their peers of Qingyun county in China’s Shandong province to investigate the ring. They asked for Lao Cai police’s coordination to arrest the gang in Vietnam.
