Can Tho, RoK join hands to advance digital transformation and smart city development
VOV.VN - Leaders from the Mekong Delta city of Can Thơ on October 17 received a delegation from the Contents Convergence Software Research Institute under Kyonggi University of the Republic of Korea (RoK) to discuss orientations and promote bilateral cooperation in multiple areas, particularly digital transformation, science and technology, and smart city development.

Professor Kwanghoon Kim, Director of the Contents Convergence Software Research Institute, Kyonggi University expressed a desire to cooperate with Can Tho on smart city initiatives and digital technology applications in urban management and operations. He noted that the RoK has extensive experience in developing digital infrastructure, renewable energy, and high-tech agriculture-sectors that align with Can Tho’s investment priorities.
During the meeting, Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the Can Tho municipal Party Committee, emphasized that science and technology, digital transformation, and innovation are key drivers of rapid and sustainable development. The city’s Party Standing Committee has established a Steering Committee to implement the Politburo’s Resolution No. 57 dated December 22, 2024, on breakthroughs in national science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation, led by the Party Secretary, to ensure effective and coordinated implementation.
Can Tho has been actively applying information technology in management and communications. The city recently held its first Party Congress for the 2025–2030 tenure, introducing several new digital initiatives such as an official Congress information portal and an electronic handbook to disseminate the Congress’s documents.
Along with reforming governance, Can Tho continues to expand international cooperation, especially with RoK partners. The city currently hosts 14 RoK foreign direct investment (FDI) projects with total registered capital exceeding US$316 million. However, local leaders acknowledged that trade and cooperation between the two sides remain below potential.
Building on existing foundations, both sides expressed a commitment to enhancing co-operation in key areas, including improving digital infrastructure, particularly data centers, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT); ensuring cybersecurity and personal data protection; and developing shared data platforms to advance digital government, digital economy, and digital society initiatives.
Through bilateral cooperation, the two sides plan to implement smart city services across agriculture, environment, urban planning, transport, tourism, healthcare, education, and public safety, including fire prevention and control. They also agreed to promote training of high-quality human resources to support the operation of the city’s smart-operation and data-analysis centers.
Can Tho’s leaders affirmed that expanding cooperation with RoK partners will continue to be strengthened in a practical and sustainable manner as a contribution to making the city a regional hub for economy, science, and technology in the Mekong Delta.
