Can Tho inaugurates two India-funded rural bridges

VOV.VN - A ceremony was held on June 16 in Can Tho city to inaugurate two rural traffic bridges under a project supported by the Government of India through its embassy in Vietnam, as part of the Quick Impact Projects (QIP) program.

The event was co-hosted by the Indian Embassy in Vietnam and the Can Tho People’s Committee. Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Sandeep Arya and his spouse attended the ceremony alongside Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, Vice Chairwoman of the Can Tho People’s Committee, and representatives from local departments and sectors.

The two newly inaugurated bridges include the Ngon Thai Binh Bridge in Trung Nhat ward, Thot Not district, and the Vanh Dai Lam Truong Bridge in Truong Xuan A commune, Thoi Lai district.

The Ngon Thai Binh Bridge is a reinforced concrete structure measuring 4.5 meters wide and 29.5 meters long, with a load capacity of five tonnes and a construction cost of nearly VND630 million. The Vanh Dai Lam Truong Bridge spans 18 meters in length and 4 meters in width, with a total cost of more than VND780 million.

Both projects were completed within three months and are now operational, thus improving traffic safety, facilitating the transport of goods, and contributing to local economic development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep noted that India is a comprehensive strategic partner of Vietnam. In recent years, Can Tho and its Indian partners have steadily expanded cooperation across various fields, particularly in economics, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

She expressed her hope that the Indian Embassy and Ambassador Arya would continue to serve as a bridge for stronger cooperation between Can Tho and India in areas of mutual strength such as education and training, scientific research, information technology, agriculture, and technology transfer. She also called for more social welfare programs and projects to support disadvantaged communities in the city.

With the foundations already in place, Can Tho leaders expressed confidence that the city’s partnership with India will become increasingly substantive, effective, and enduring, helping to elevate the Vietnam–India comprehensive strategic partnership to new heights.

Ambassador Arya welcomed the completion of the bridge projects, noting the benefits they bring to local residents. He shared that India sponsors around 10 similar initiatives each year under the Mekong–Ganga Cooperation framework, aiming to generate mutual benefits for both India and Mekong sub-region countries.

Looking ahead, he expressed hope that Can Tho will become an important partner in the growing India–Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership.
