Cambodian gets six years in jail for smuggling gold into Vietnam

The People’s Court of southern An Giang province on March 30 sentenced 51 – year – old Cambodian, Rim Ri Linh, to six years in jail for illegally transporting 18 kilograms of gold from Cambodia to Vietnam.

Rim Ri Linh, a former major and deputy chief of the border security office in Phnom Den, Cambodia, was spotted by the customs officers at the Tinh Bien border gate in An Giang on November 25, 2016 when he was driving his car from Cambodia to Vietnam and did not stop to clear immigration procedures.

The customs officers discovered 18 kilograms of gold, worth about VND15.6 billion (US$658,152) at that time on the car. 

According to Linh’s statement, he had accepted the offer of a Cambodian man named Ti to transport the gold to a Vietnamese woman in Nha Bang town.
