Bualoi death toll rises to 36 in Vietnam, losses exceed VND11.4 trillion

VOV.VN - As of the morning of October 2, typhoon Bualoi has left 36 people dead, 21 missing, and 147 injured, with economic losses estimated at VND11.4 trillion, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

The typhoon and subsequent floods also left trail of destruction, with 160 houses destroyed and nearly 155,000 damaged. More than 51,000 hectares of agricultural land and 13,400 hectares of aquaculture were affected.

Around 1,600 livestock and 405,000 poultry were either drowned or killed. Nearly 1,400 schools were impacted, while more than 6,800 locations across roads in northern and north-central Vietnam were flooded or landslide-affected, causing serious traffic disruptions.

In addition, 8,200 power poles and 65,000 trees were downed, leaving 2.7 million customers without electricity.

Total estimated economic losses exceed VND11.4 trillion (approximately US$470 million). Ha Tinh suffered the heaviest damage with losses of around VND6 trillion, followed by Lao Cai with VND2.75 trillion, and Nghe An with VND1.6 trillion.

Over the past few days, rising floodwaters from major rivers in northern and central provinces such as Tuyen Quang, Son La, Quang Nam, Nghe An, and Thanh Hoa have isolated many residential areas. In Nghe An in particular, numerous mountain villages were cut off due to sudden surges of floodwaters, with water levels exceeding 3m in some places, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate urgently.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, rainfall in northern Vietnam has significantly decreased since October 1, with only scattered showers of 30–70 mm in provinces such as Tuyen Quang, Lai Chau, Son La, and Thai Nguyen. Water levels in upstream rivers like the Thao, Thuong, and Lo are forecast to recede in the coming days.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has requested hydropower plants to gradually close their floodgates in order to reduce flooding pressure in downstream areas.
