ADB considers cooperation with Binh Duong in environmental projects

A delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had a working session with the People’s Committee of Binh Duong on February 22 to discuss cooperation in investing in environmental projects in the southern province.

Vice Chairman of the Binh Duong People’s Committee Dang Minh Hung (R) meets with Director of the ADB Urban Development and Water Division Vijay Padmanabhan on February 22

At the meeting, Vijay Padmanabhan, Director of the ADB Urban Development and Water Division, hailed the determination of Binh Duong leaders in implementing water-related projects.

The ADB hopes to work with Binh Duong to issue a timely agreement regarding the 25-million-USD Nam Binh Duong water drainage project, he said, adding that the bank also wishes to collaborate with the province to build the Binh Duong smart city in the future.

Dang Minh Hung, Vice Chairman of the Binh Duong People’s Committee, said that in 2018, Binh Duong’s total GRDP grew by about 9.01 percent, higher than the set target of 8.5 percent.

The per capita GRDP reached 130.8 million VND (5,630 USD), he said, adding that Binh Duong attracted nearly 3,500 foreign-invested projects with a total registered capital of more than 31 billion USD, ranking third in 63 localities nationwide in the field after HCM City and Hanoi.

The province is working to become a first-grade urban area in 2020. Hung said that along with economic development, the province has paid great attention to settling social problems, especially water supply and irrigation.

Currently, Binh Duong has been focusing on treating concentrated wastewater in Thu Dau Mot city and parts of Di An and Thuan An towns.

Therefore, the province is in need of investment and cooperation to synchronise its wastewater treatment systems.

Over the years, the ADB has supported Binh Duong in the field and recognised the efficiency of joint projects, he noted, showing his hope that the bank will continue launching more projects in Binh Duong, including the Nam Binh Duong project.

Following the working session, the ADB working group met with the Binh Duong Water-Environment JSC to discuss issues related to cooperation in the Nam Binh Duong wastewater treatment project.
