The remaining five patients had not eaten banh mi but were admitted with symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and high fever, suspected food poisoning.

Earlier, from the morning of April 17 to the morning of April 18, the hospital received 28 patients with similar symptoms. Most reported eating banh mi at one of the two outlets. Patients were treated across several departments: 19 in Infectious Diseases, three in Internal Medicine, one in Obstetrics and five in Pediatrics.

On April 19 and up to noon on April 20, the hospital admitted a further 34 patients, all with suspected food poisoning symptoms, with most having eaten banh mi at the same two outlets.

By 15:00 the same day, five patients had been discharged; the remaining patients were stable, with no severe cases recorded.

Regarding the case, on the morning of April 19, the Vietnam Food Safety Authority asked the Nghe An Department of Health to urgently investigate, trace the origin of the suspected food, identify the source of ingredients suspected of causing the poisoning, and take food and clinical samples for testing to determine the cause and handle violations in line with regulations.
