60-year-old woman safely delivers healthy baby boy in Hanoi

VOV.VN - Doctors at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology have successfully performed a cesarean section for a 60-year-old pregnant woman, a case considered extremely high-risk due to age and multiple underlying health conditions.

The surgery was carried out safely, and the newborn boy weighed 2.8 kilograms with stable health and good reflexes, doctors said.

The patient was admitted at 38 weeks and 2 days of pregnancy. Although her overall condition was relatively stable, she had several risk factors, including chronic hypertension under treatment, gestational diabetes, and a history of gynecological surgeries such as ectopic pregnancy removal and uterine adhesion separation.

According to doctors, pregnancy and childbirth at the age of 60 carry significant risks, particularly affecting the cardiovascular and endocrine systems, as well as recovery capacity. Potential complications include cardiovascular incidents, stroke related to high blood pressure, blood sugar disorders during and after surgery, postpartum hemorrhage due to poor uterine contraction, infection, and delayed recovery. Previous surgeries also increase the risk of adhesions, tissue damage, and bleeding during the operation.

Despite stable vital signs before surgery, the medical team closely monitored the patient due to the complexity of the case and the possibility of unpredictable developments.

The operation was led by Prod. Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, director of the hospital, along with an experienced anesthesia and resuscitation team. The baby was delivered safely on March 20, coinciding with International Day of Happiness.

Prof. Dr. Anh shared that while he had previously performed surgery on a 57-year-old patient, this case brought particular joy to the entire team. The mother had faced numerous challenges in conceiving, including the loss of one fallopian tube due to ectopic pregnancy and uterine adhesions caused by previous miscarriages. After undergoing treatment, she was finally able to carry the pregnancy to term and give birth to a healthy baby.

Medical experts emphasise that pregnancies at an advanced maternal age should be closely monitored at specialised healthcare facilities to ensure the safety of both mother and child. Postnatal care is also critical to prevent potential complications.
