53rd UPU letter-writing contest launched in Vietnam
VOV.VN - The 53rd International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) was launched on January 5 at the Nguyen Binh Khiem ethnic boarding secondary school in the northern province of Thai Nguyen.
Addressing the event, Tran Thanh Ha, deputy director of International Cooperation Department under the Ministry of Information and Communication and deputy head of the contest’s organisers, stressed the competition has helped to nurture the love and responsibility of young people for various social and national issues.
Since 1971, the UPU has encouraged young writers aged nine to 15 to write letters on a given theme in order to win exciting prizes. The event represents an excellent way of making young people aware of the important role that postal services play in their societies.
This year will see participants encouraged to reflect on the future of the world under the theme of “At 150 years old, the UPU has served people around the world for more than eight generations. The world has changed enormously since then. Write a letter to future generations about the world you hope they inherit.”
The chosen theme seeks to encourages young people to articulate their thoughts on current global challenges and propose innovative solutions to them.
In Vietnam the contest will be launched at schools across the country from January 5 to March 15.
Dao Khuong Duy, a sixth grader at Huynh Tan Phat secondary school in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, won third prize of the 52nd International Letter-Writing Competition.
This marks the 18th time Vietnamese students have won prizes after 35 years of engaging in the contest.
