Fourteen cases were diagnosed in Quang Nam, 11 in Ho Chi Minh City, 2 in Thanh Hoa and one each in Hanoi, Hai Phong and Hai Duong.
All these cases were documented upon their arriving from overseas, said the MoH, adding that most of the cases were mild and asymptomatic.
Though Omicron is said to result in mild illness that can resemble the common cold, experts warned people should not underestimate the danger of this new variant.
“What concerns us most is that Omicron spreads very quickly that can overload the health system unless an active response plan is in place,” said Dr. Do Cao Van Anh from Pham Ngoc Thach Medical University in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the MoH, more Omicron cases would be recorded in Vietnam in the coming weeks as more Vietnamese people are returning to the homeland for the coming Lunar New Year holiday (Tet). Therefore, it warned the risk of virus spreading to the community is rather high.
