2,500-year-old Lyrid meteor shower to peak tonight for local stargazers
VOV.VN - The Lyrid meteor shower will reach its peak on the night of April 22 into the early hours of April 23, with up to 18 meteors visible per hour, according to Time and Date.
Named after constellation Lyra, the Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers. Historical Chinese records suggest the phenomenon was observed more than 2,500 years ago.
The website shared that the fireballs in the meteor shower are created by debris from comet Thatcher, which takes about 415 years to orbit around the Sun. The comet is expected to be visible from Earth again in 2276.
The Lyrids have been active since April 14 and will intensify toward the peak. Viewing conditions this year are expected to be favourable due to minimal moonlight. Observers are advised to allow 15–20 minutes for their eyes to adjust to the dark and to choose an open area away from city lights.
In addition to typical meteors, the Lyrids may occasionally produce bright fireballs, offering a striking celestial display.
