Gamma Normid meteor shower to be visible in Vietnam
VOV.VN - Skywatchers in Vietnam will soon have the opportunity to observe an interesting celestial event as the Gamma Normid meteor shower (γ-Normids) is expected to be visible in the early hours of March 15, reported the Hanoi Astronomical Society (HAS).
The most suitable time for observation will be a few hours before sunrise, when the sky remains dark. Meteors are forecast to appear in the southern part of the sky, close to the horizon.
According to space.com, the meteor shower's radiant, the point from which its meteorites appear to stream, is located in the southern sky constellation Norma. That means that the Gamma Normids are best seen whenever the small constellation Norma is above the horizon.
Like all meteor showers, the Gamma Normids are created when Earth on its yearly journey around the sun passes through debris left behind by a comet or an asteroid. This debris which consists of fragments ranging from the size of dust to small pebbles spreads out along the path of its parent object through the solar system.
Observers in Vietnam may still be able to see several meteors, provided that the sky is clear and light pollution is limited.
Experts advise viewers to choose locations with a wide, unobstructed view toward the south and avoid areas with strong urban lighting to improve the chances of spotting meteors.
One of the appealing aspects of meteor showers is that no telescope or specialised equipment is required. Under favourable weather conditions, the phenomenon can be observed with the naked eye.
Observers are recommended to head to places with minimal artificial lighting, an open view of the sky and allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness for 15–20 minutes before watching. This helps the eyes become more sensitive to faint streaks of light in the night sky.
Although not the largest meteor shower of the year, the Gamma Normids meteor shower í an interesting astronomical phenomenon, offering night-sky enthusiasts the chance to witness fleeting streaks of light across the sky.
