16-year-old British pilot arrives in Vietnam on round-the-world flight

VOV.VN - Mack Rutherford, a British-Belgian pilot, landed his plane in the central coastal city of Da Nang on July 19 as the teenager continues on his quest to become the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world.

According to details given by the British Embassy in Vietnam on July 20, the young pilot initially began his journey after taking off from Bulgaria in March.

Mack has flown Sharky, his ultralight aircraft from Europe, through various locations in Africa and is now travelling in Asia. He made pit stops in Kolkata in India and Chiang Mai in Thailand before his arrival in the nation.

Hailing from a family of pilots, Mack has flown hundreds of hours alongside his dad, who is a professional pilot, including two Trans-Atlantic crossings.

Earlier this year, Mack's older sister Zara, aged 19, set the record for being the world's youngest female pilot to fly solo around the world.

Moving forward, Mack's next stop is the Philippines.

On his individual website, he wrote, “I took off in March 2022 and want to attempt to break the current world record of youngest person to fly solo around the world.”

“I want to use the opportunity to meet young people on my route who do incredible things, making a difference to their communities or even to the world. Often few people know about them. Together we can show that young people make a difference,” he shared.
