14th National Party Congress marks historic milestone for new era

VOV.VN - The 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam will take place from January 19 to January 25, 2026, and is regarded as a milestone of special importance in the country’s development path.

Stronger national position and capacity ahead of the new era

According to Party General Secretary To Lam, the new era will begin with the 14th National Party Congress. The ultimate destination of this era of national advancement is a prosperous people, a strong country, a socialist society, and Vietnam standing shoulder to shoulder with major powers across the world.

The foremost priority in the new era is the successful realization of strategic goals: by 2030, Vietnam becoming a developing country with modern industry and upper-middle income; by 2045, a developed socialist country with high income. The process also aims to strongly inspire national pride, the spirit of independence, confidence, self-reliance and self-strengthening, and the aspiration for national development, while closely combining national strength with the strength of the times.

Assessing the country’s position and capacity as it prepares to enter the new era, Associate Professor Dr.Vu Van Phuc, former Editor-in-Chief of the Communist Review, said that after 40 years of Doi Moi (renewal), Vietnam’s overall standing and strength have improved markedly. From a poor and backward economy heavily affected by the consequences of war, the country has risen to become a country with a dynamic economy and is widely viewed by the international community as a global bright spot.

These achievements are reflected in political and social stability, an increasingly attractive investment and business environment, and Vietnam’s role as a friend, a reliable partner, and an active, responsible member of the international community.

After four decades of renewal, the country’s capacity across all fields has continued to strengthen. The socialist-oriented market economy has developed robustly, with the size of the economy in 2025 estimated at about US$510 billion and GDP per capita exceeding US$5,000.

Remarkable progress has also been recorded in culture, social affairs, education and training, science and technology, and health care. Social security and welfare have seen positive outcomes, while the material and spiritual life of the people has continued to improve. Vietnam’s happiness index and sustainable development indicators have also shown further improvement.

Foreign relations have expanded, with international integration becoming increasingly comprehensive and effective. Vietnam’s position and prestige on the international stage have continued to rise. “This vivid reality further affirms that the path toward socialism chosen by the Party and President Ho Chi Minh is entirely correct, suited to Vietnam’s conditions and in line with the development trends of the times,” Associate Professor Dr. Vu Van Phuc emphasized.

Party will and public support forming powerful force

Associate Professor Dr. Vu Van Phuc, stated that one of the most notable theoretical and practical achievements after 40 years of renewal is the gradual establishment and consolidation of three core pillars of Vietnamese socialism: the socialist-oriented market economy, the socialist rule-of-law state, and socialist democracy.

These three pillars form a unified whole, with dialectical relationships that interact and reinforce one another, providing a solid foundation for national development in the new phase. Within this framework, the people are consistently identified as being at the center, as the principal actor, and as the ultimate objective of all development policies.

He added that the world is undergoing profound, rapid and complex changes, presenting both opportunities and intertwined challenges. The period from now to 2030 has been identified as a particularly important phase-a “sprint” period-for Vietnam to realize its centennial strategic goals under the Party’s leadership and the centenary of the founding of the country.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, particularly in artificial intelligence and digital technologies, is opening up plenty of opportunities for developing countries to move ahead and achieve breakthroughs, provided they are able to seize and make effective use of these opportunities. “Vietnam’s revolutionary history has shown that when Party will converges with public support, and when the spirit of renewal, initiative and accountability is upheld, the country has consistently been able to achieve remarkable achievements,” he said.

To realize the Party’s strategies, draft documents to be submitted to the 14th National Party Congress have been carefully prepared, providing strategic direction and embodying the collective wisdom of the Party and the people, while demonstrating the unity between Party will and public support.

Dr.Bui Van Thach, Standing Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and Deputy Head of the Editorial Team for the documents of the 14th National Party Congress, said the documents set out major orientations, including continuing to build and comprehensively improve institutions to enable rapid and sustainable development.

They also set the target of achieving an average GDP growth rate of at least 10% per year during the 2026-2030 period, while establishing a new growth model, restructuring the economy, accelerating industrialization and modernization, and identifying science, technology and innovation as the primary driving forces.

According to him, these are major and important policy orientations that will enable the country to enter a new era of development with sufficient mindset, resources and momentum to realize the two centennial goals.

The 14th National Party Congress is expected to open a new period of national development, marking an important shift in thinking, vision and development drivers. Building on the major achievements of the past 40 years of renewal, together with the alignment between Party will and public support, Vietnam has a solid basis to confidently move into a new era-an era of strong national development.
