Vietnam’s top leader heads to Nanning after Beijing leg of China state visit

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and President To Lam and his spouse left Beijing on April 16 for Nanning city (China) by high-speed train, continuing the state visit to China after completing activities in the capital.

Chinese officials accompanying the delegation included Liu Haixing, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee; Chen Zhou, deputy head of the same body; and Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam He Wei and his spouse.

At the station, Yin Yong, member of the CPC Central Committee and Mayor of Beijing, and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in China saw off To Lam, his spouse and the Vietnamese high-level delegation.

On the train, representatives of China’s railway enterprises gave a brief report to To Lam on the development of the country’s railway sector. As of early 2026, China’s operating railway network reached 165,000 km, including about 54,000 km of high-speed rail, the longest in the world and accounting for more than 70% of the global total.

Since the issuance of the “Medium- and Long-term Railway Network Plan” in 2004, China has, within two decades, built a railway network connecting major urban areas and among the most modern in the world. The network reaches 99% of cities with populations of over 200,000, and more than 130 localities nationwide are connected by rail. The total length of China’s operating railway network has increased from 68,700 km in 2000 to 165,000 km at present, about 2.4 times.

Under plans to 2035, China will form a modern, high-quality transport network with a total length of about 700,000 km. Of this, railways will reach 200,000 km and play a key role in the overall transport system, connecting all district-level administrative units and above, border gates and key infrastructure areas.

Expressing his impression of the development of China’s high-speed railway network, which is not only the longest but also the most widely used in the world and is expected to continue expanding in the near future, To Lam said he hopes the two countries will continue to strengthen transport connectivity cooperation, including railways, for green development and national growth.

Stressing the importance of cooperation with China in high-speed rail, To Lam called on leaders of China’s railway sector and enterprises to share experience and support Vietnam, and to take part in construction and technology transfer for key railway projects in Vietnam.

Recently, during a field inspection of the implementation of Vietnam-China railway connectivity cooperation in Lang Son province, the top Vietnamese leader said such cooperation is both a need and an opportunity.

If implemented effectively and managed properly, it will form a practical area of cooperation, helping reduce logistics costs and transport time, promote trade and border economic development, improve clearance capacity and reduce congestion at road border gates, while linking Vietnam with the Asia-Europe railway transport network.

This will diversify international transport routes, enhance regional economic linkages, especially in northern Vietnam, boost regional connectivity and elevate Vietnam’s position in the Asian supply chain.
