Vietnamese, US defence officials discuss war legacy cooperation
VOV.VN - On February 19 (local time) in Washington D.C., while accompanying Party General Secretary To Lam’s delegation to attend the opening session of the Board of Peace for Gaza, General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member and Minister of National Defence, met Elbridge A. Colby, First Under Secretary of War of the US.
General Phan Van Giang congratulated the US on the successful opening of the Board and affirmed that Vietnam regards the US as one of its important partners, particularly in economic and trade cooperation.
He expressed his desire for the two countries to continue cooperation on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, respect for international law, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and each other’s political institutions, thus contributing to security, peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
He said that in recent years the Ministry of National Defence of Vietnam and the US Department of War have coordinated effectively in implementing signed agreements in line with directions of senior leaders of both countries. Key areas include delegation exchanges and contacts at various levels, cooperation in addressing war consequences, United Nations peacekeeping, and education and training.
Giang reiterated that Vietnam regards the US as an important partner and seeks continued cooperation on the same principles. He thanked the US for its support in dealing with post-war unexploded ordnance and dioxin contamination in Vietnam, as well as in the search, recovery and identification of Vietnamese soldiers who died or went missing during the war.
Elbridge A. Colby thanked General Phan Van Giang for receiving the delegation and extended Lunar New Year greetings. He expressed a desire to strengthen defence cooperation for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
The US Department of War committed to continue supporting Vietnam in settling war consequences, identifying Vietnamese soldiers who died or went missing, and in education and training.
Minister Phan Van Giang proposed that both sides continue to realize signed agreements effectively, including the Memorandum of Understanding on promoting cooperation in addressing war consequences signed in October 2025, and to move forward with commitments to support Vietnam in this field, particularly the dioxin remediation project at Bien Hoa airbase. Vietnam will continue to create favourable conditions for efforts to search for US personnel missing in action (MIA) during the war, and expressed the wish that the US further share information, documents and memorabilia related to Vietnamese soldiers who died or went missing.
Both sides agreed to boost cooperation for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
On this occasion, General Phan Van Giang, visited and extended New Year greetings to officers and staff of the Vietnam Defence Attaché Office in the United States.
He stressed that in consistently implementing the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, and proactive and comprehensive international integration, the Vietnam People’s Army in recent years has promoted defence external relations at both bilateral and multilateral levels with practical results.
Defence external relations have become one of the pillars of Party external affairs and State diplomacy and an important channel for building and consolidating strategic trust, developing friendly relations with countries and international organisations, and enhancing the position and prestige of Vietnam and its armed forces.
Giang expressed confidence that the Defence Attaché Office will continue to perform its advisory role and carry out defence external activities effectively to promote mutual understanding and defence cooperation between the two countries as a contribution to the development of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
