Vietnam welcomes Singaporean Prime Minister on official visit

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh hosted a welcome ceremony for Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore Lawrence Wong and his spouse, who are on an official visit to Vietnam from March 25 to 26, at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on the morning of March 26.

Taking place just over a week after Party General Secretary To Lam’s visit to Singapore, during which the Vietnam-Singapore relationship was upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The visit marks Lawrence Wong’s first official visit to Vietnam in his capacity as Prime Minister.

It contributes to realizing the outcomes of the Vietnamese top Party leader’s trip to Singapore and further strengthening the new cooperation framework between the two nations.

Following the welcome ceremony, the two PMs proceeded to the Government Office for official talks. Prior to the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong visited a photo exhibition on Vietnam’s land, people, and the strong Vietnam-Singapore ties, jointly organized by the Government Office and the Vietnam News Agency.

During his visit, PM Lawrence Wong is also scheduled to meet with senior Party, State, and National Assembly leaders of Vietnam, as well as engage in other activities.

After 52 years of diplomatic relations, particularly following Party General Secretary To Lam’s recent visit, Vietnam-Singapore ties are at a particularly strong stage, marked by growing political trust, close economic and investment cooperation, and vibrant people-to-people exchanges. High-level delegations are exchanged frequently, and both countries closely coordinate at regional and international forums.

Economic, trade, and investment cooperation remains a key pillar of the bilateral relationship. Singapore is consistently one of Vietnam’s largest economic partners, with bilateral trade reaching US$10.3 billion in 2024.

The island city state is also the largest ASEAN investor in Vietnam and ranks second among 149 countries and territories investing in the country, with nearly 4,000 valid projects and total registered capital exceeding US$84 billion. Among these, Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIPs) stand as a symbol of their economic partnership.

Vietnam currently has 153 investment projects in Singapore, with a total registered capital of over US$690 million. Notably, Singapore was the first country with which Vietnam established a Digital Economy – Green Economy Partnership.

Education and human resource training are another highlight of bilateral cooperation, with more than 21,000 mid- and senior-level Vietnamese officials having participated in training programs under the Singapore Cooperation Programme over the past 30 years. The Vietnamese community in Singapore, numbering around 20,000, adheres to local laws while maintaining strong ties to their homeland, serving as a bridge for Vietnam-Singapore relations.

PM Lawrence Wong’s visit comes at a time when both countries are celebrating significant milestones. In 2025, Singapore will mark its 60th National Day and the 10th anniversary of the passing of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Meanwhile, Vietnam will commemorate the 95th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 80th National Day, the 50th anniversary of national reunification, and the 30th anniversary of its accession to ASEAN, stepping into a new era of development.

During this visit, both sides will further discuss the implementation of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, sharing strategic goals and addressing mutual concerns to overcome challenges, enhance resilience, and drive strong growth together.

With over five decades of strong bilateral ties, the official visit of PM Lawrence Wong and his spouse to Vietnam is set for success, further enhancing the Vietnam-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a more effective and substantive way.
