Vietnam, US move toward stronger cooperation based on trust and friendship
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang hosted a delegation of US lawmakers led by Congressman Michael Baumgartner of Washington state, a member of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, in Hanoi on May 26 during their working visit to Vietnam.
Welcoming the delegation, General Phan Van Giang said Vietnam-US relations have continued to see positive development across a variety of fields in recent years.
In parliamentary cooperation, the two sides have maintained regular delegation exchanges and contacts between specialised committees while sharing experience in legislation, supervision and policymaking. These activities, he said, have helped strengthen mutual understanding and political trust while creating a favourable legal foundation for carrying out bilateral agreements.
Alongside positive results in economic, trade and investment ties, the US has also actively supported Vietnam in settling war consequences through dioxin remediation projects and assistance for poor people and people with disabilities.
The host expressed hope that US lawmakers will continue acting as practical bridges of friendship to help expand ties in areas including economics, trade, education and training, defence industry cooperation, pilot training and English-language training for Vietnamese military personnel.
The US delegation showed great joy to visit Vietnam and witness firsthand the country’s achievements in socio-economic development and improving people’s living standards. They said the visit carried a message of strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two countries and people.
Expressing appreciation for General Phan Van Giang’s spirit of cooperation, the US lawmakers affirmed they will continue making practical and effective contributions to enhancing bilateral ties, particularly in areas highlighted during the meeting.
During the reception, General Giang and the US delegation also exchanged views on regional and international issues of shared concern, including those relating to security and national defence.
