Vietnam, UK enhance strategic partnership

VOV.VN -Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) President Nguyen Thien Nhan has reiterated the country's recognition of high importance on developing its strategic partnership with the UK.

At a reception for Eleanor Laing, Deputy Speaker of the British House of Commons on October 3 in Hanoi, the VFF leader expressed his hope that the two countries will intensify investment and that British enterprises will increase their operations in Vietnam in areas such as education, finance, banking, infrastructure, insurance, science and technology, and aviation.

Nhan also hailed the two countries’ cooperation at international forums, hoping that both nations will continue to work together at the UN, ASEAN, EU, and cooperate with each other on such global issues as climate change and rising sea levels. He also called for joint efforts to assure security and peace in the East Sea.

Meeting with the UK guest the same day, National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong urged both sides to increase delegation exchanges, enhance bilateral dialogue and mutual support at multilateral forums and international organizations.

She praised the project “Young Vietnamese National Assembly” between the two countries and supported the two countries in establishing the Vietnam-UK Friendship Parliamentarians Group.

Phong suggested the UK share its experiences and help Vietnam in capacity building for legislators.

Ms Laing promised to help the Vietnam legislative body in personnel training and proposed solutions to boost the strategic partnership between the two countries and two legislatures.

She underlined her nation's stance that the parties involved need to obey international law and the UK’s strong support for freedom, safety, and security of navigation and aviation in the East Sea.

Later the day, Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing had a meeting with young Vietnamese NA deputies.
