Vietnam to join UN Human Rights Council's UPR

(VOV) - A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc will participate in the second cycle of the Universal Periodical Review (UPR) of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland from February 2-9.

Vietnam’s involvement in the event aims to highlight the country’s efforts and achievements in the renewal process to promote democracy and ensure human rights.

This also shows Vietnam’s progress in improving external affairs openly based on cooperation with all countries including those with differences to deepen mutual understanding and share experiences in ensuring human rights.

Vietnam started to implement the UPR mechanism for the first time in May 2009 and received 123 recommendations.

The country’s response to UPR recommendations is shown in its efforts in fine-tuning the legal systems and policies to protect human rights and rights of vulnerable groups, reduce poverty, ensure economic sustainability and social security, and improve health care and education.
