Vietnam, Thailand bolster defence ties through practical cooperation
VOV.VN - Senior defence officials of Vietnam and Thailand have agreed to strengthen military cooperation, focusing on joint training, maritime law enforcement, and mutual support at multilateral forums.
At the talks held the same day following an official welcome ceremony for the Thai defence official, both sides then held talks, during which General Tan Cuong emphasized ASEAN’s vital role in regional security architecture and highlighted Vietnam’s commitment to deepening cooperation with ASEAN members, including Thailand.
He reaffirmed that defence cooperation remains a cornerstone of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Thailand. Both sides noted strengthening ties in key areas, including delegation exchanges, defence policy dialogue, personnel training, officer exchanges, service branch collaboration, and support at multilateral forums.
Cuong proposed further enhancing high-level visits, optimizing existing cooperation mechanisms, and expanding practical co-operation in areas such as maritime law enforcement. He also laid stress on the importance of close coordination in multinational mechanisms and international events hosted by either country.
The discussions further covered global and regional issues of mutual concern. General Tan Cuong reaffirmed Vietnam’s foreign policy principles: independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation, and multilateralization, underpinned by the “four no’s” defence policy. On the East Sea (South China Sea), he reiterated Vietnam’s consistent stance of resolving disputes peacefully, based on international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and supported the early finalization of an effective Code of Conduct (COC) .
General Songwit Noonpackdee expressed his appreciation for Vietnam’s “four no’s” policy and confirmed Thailand’s support for peaceful dispute resolution rooted in international law. He said he looks forward to further deepening bilateral defence cooperation in a practical and effective manner.
